The updated Skoda Rapid, revealed in February, has been detailed for the European market this week, bringing a revised design, new engine options and upgraded technology to the small sedan and hatchback twins.

Headlining changes for the updated model include the availability of new bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime-running lights, revised front bumper and fog-light designs, new alloy wheels, autonomous emergency braking, and a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

Inside, European versions now get the option of an upgraded infotainment system with WiFi hotspot, along with a rear-seat entertainment system that allows two tablets to be installed behind the front headrests and control the central infotainment system, along with two additional USB ports in the rear and the option of heated rear seats.

Also new is what’s under the bonnet. The updated Rapid range adds the option of the Volkswagen Group’s new 1.0-litre turbocharged three-pot petrol engine, in either 70kW or 81kW tunes.

A five-speed manual or seven-speed DSG transmission is available with the lower-output version, while the 81kW version is available solely with a six-speed manual.

Spaceback models also get a longer rear window for improved visibility.

Australia

The updated Skoda Rapid Spaceback will arrive in Australia in September, with the sedan body again left out of the local line up.

Paul Pottinger, general manager for corporate communications at Skoda Australia, confirmed with CarAdvice that the refreshed Rapid will offer both the existing 92kW 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo mated to a seven-speed DSG, and the higher-output 81kW 1.0-litre turbo triple exclusively with a six-speed manual – the latter replacing the current 1.2-litre manual-equipped entry model.

While final pricing and specifications are still to be confirmed, Pottinger said we can expect similar positioning to the vehicle currently on sale, which kicks off at $18,190 before on-road costs for the 1.2-litre turbo manual Rapid, rising to $25,990 plus ORCs for the DSG-equipped Rapid Monte Carlo,.
