2019 Jeep Wrangler ute spied with production tray

The Jeep Wrangler ute has been spied again, but this time in a higher state of production-readiness.

The last time we saw the Wrangler ute out-and-about, it was fitted with a tray seemingly stolen from the back of a Ram 1500 pickup. It had wheel arches improperly aligned with the rear wheels, as well as styling completely at odds to the rest of the car.

This latest prototype has been fitted with what appears to be an almost production-ready tray. Despite the full body camouflage suit, we can this car has rear wheel arches that’s centred on the rear axle.

Also, this tray features the Wrangler’s signature squared-off wheel arch extensions.

It’s not known, at this stage, what engines will be offered with the Wrangler ute, but we’d be surprised if it differed greatly from the rest of the next-generation Wrangler range.

A leak earlier this month claimed the new Wrangler would be available with the Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 in two states of tune.

This will be joined by 2.2- and 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engines, as well as the long talked about turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, which is rumoured to have 224kW of power in its top-spec.

With vehicles like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger regularly topping the sales charts, it’s no surprise the new Wrangler ute has been developed for right-hand drive markets.

The company’s local arm has reportedly had input into the car’s specifications and tuning, and the Wrangler ute is scheduled to have a round of testing in Australia before its development cycle is completed.

Last year, Mike Manley, head of Jeep, confirmed with CarAdvice the Wrangler ute will go into production from September 2018, but won’t be available for overseas markets until 2019.
