Toyota Yaris GRMN five-door spied

A five-door version of the Toyota Yaris GRMN hot hatch has been spied during development testing in Europe this week.

When it was first revealed at the Geneva motor show in March, Toyota said the production companion to the Yaris WRC car would only be made available in three-door form like the vehicle that debuted at the event, however, these latest images suggest otherwise.

Distinguishing this prototype from the vehicle revealed in Geneva, other than the extra pair of doors, is the tail-pipe mounted on the right-hand side of the rear bumper, while the three-door version sported a central outlet. The large rear wing, light alloy wheels and more aggressive front bumper remain.

Co-developed with Gazoo Racing, the Yaris GRMN features a supercharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, developing “more than 210hp” (155kW) matched exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission sending drive to the front wheels.

Though yet to be confirmed, Toyota claims the Yaris hot hatch achieves best-in class times for the 0-100km/h sprint and rolling 80-120km/h acceleration in fourth gear.

A five-door version means the Yaris GRMN could be on the cards for more markets, including Australia, though the idea of a Yaris hot hatch has already been ruled out by Toyota’s local arm.

Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer of the company’s sport vehicle management division, confirmed in Geneva that “Production for the (three-door) GRMN, this one is always limited – 100 units per country. So far Japan, Germany and France”.

Considering Australia’s thirst for performance vehicles, it would be a shame for Toyota to not offer any form of hot hatch locally, with go-fast customers forced to opt for the 86 sports car.
