On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America is going to be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone inside the trail of totality will see one in all nature’s most awe exalting sights – a complete occultation. This path, where the moon can fully cover the sun and therefore the sun’s tenuous atmosphere – the corona – is often seen, will stretch from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path can still see a partial eclipse where the moon covers a part of the sun’s disk. Matrix World Disclosure created this article and countdown timer to provide a guide to the current wonderful event. Here you’ll notice activities, events, broadcasts, and resources from National Aeronautics and Space Administration and our partners across the state.

At most, the moon will completely cover the disk of the sun for 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

The moons umbral shadow are going to be passing in a slender corridor (places where “Totality” are going to be seen), beginning in northern Pacific and so before crossing the following United States of America States: Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina. people within the rest of the u. s. also as most of the Northern american continent are going to be able to see a partial eclipse.

Because the shadow of the moon will move from west to east, totality will occur later in the day the farther east you travel.

The chart below lists the moment of mid-totality and the duration of totality for a handful of cities that lie close to the center of the path. Data from NASA.

In 2024, a total solar eclipse will darken the skies above Mexico and Texas, up through the Midwest and northeastern U.S

Monday, August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will track from the Pacific to the Atlantic.(see the video below)

Anyone planning to view the total solar eclipse of 2017 should get a pair of solar viewing glasses. These protective shades make it possible for observers to look directly at the sun before and after totality.

With that in mind, make sure you plan for extra travel time, especially on the day of the eclipse. Most hotel rooms inside the path of totality have been booked for months or years, so you may not be able to stay inside the path the night before.

When selecting a location where you plan to view the eclipse, keep in mind your proximity to food, water, parking and facilities. Attending an organized eclipse event is an ideal way to make sure those things are close by. Traveling even short distances could be difficult in some areas, and midday in the middle of August can mean punishing heat in many parts of the country.
