Peugeot Pick Up: Rebadged Chinese ute to go on sale in Africa

The new Peugeot Pick Up sees the French brand return to the world of rough-and-ready utes, although only for the African market.

The Pick Up marks a return to the African ute market, which Peugeot exited when Nigeria stopped producing the 504 pickup in 2005, and is basically a Dongfeng Rich ute with a new grille, and a tailgate emblazoned with the Peugeot brand.

Given the fact that Dongfeng has owned around 13 per cent of Peugeot since 2014, this tie up makes easy corporate sense.

Interestingly, the Dongfeng Rich is based on the ‘D22’ Nissan Navara, which made its debut in 1997, and stems from the company’s long-standing joint venture partnership in China.

The Rich was given a new and unique body in 2014, but the interior is largely carried over, with some adjustments, from the 1990s ute.

Motivation for the Pick Up comes from a 2.5-litre common-rail turbo-diesel engine with 86kW of power and 280Nm of torque. A five-speed manual is the only transmission on offer, although buyers can choose between rear- and four-wheel drive models. The latter features a manually selectable low-range mode.

The Pick Up’s standard features include Yokohama tyres, a radio with a CD player and USB slot, anti-lock brakes with brake force distribution, rear parking sensors, and driver and front passenger airbags.

Available luxuries include air conditioning, and electric windows and mirrors.

The Peugeot Pick Up will offered solely as a dual-cab model, and measures 5.08 metres in length. The tray bed measures 1.4m by 1.39m, features anchoring hooks, and a maximum payload of 815kg.
