Honda Australia’s Takata airbag recall update

Honda Australia says it has completed 69 per cent of the enormous recall on third-party airbag inflators made by supplier Takata.

However, given the task of tracking down some older affected vehicles is tougher (some are 16 years old), the company doesn’t expect to complete the fixes for another 12 months.

The company’s stretched 107-site dealer network is churning through about 5000 repair jobs per week, but is being stifled by the sheer scale of the recall.

So far the company has done 449,032 inflator repairs, leaving it with 201,347 to go (figures accurate as of 11am on July 3).

All told, Honda Australia has recalled 426,198 vehicles in Australia and specifically 650,379 inflators.

For those out of the loop, the Takata saga has been the biggest auto recall ever, involving tens of millions of potentially lethal exploding airbag inflators sold worldwide in cars made by Honda, BMW, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan and more.

Last week, the automotive parts maker filed for bankruptcy in both the US and Japan.

As one of the worst-affected brands caught up in the issue locally, Honda Australia has been caught out.

In total there are about 15 different recalls operating parallel to each other, and Honda’s warehouse near Melbourne airport has long been bursting at the seams with parts from Japan.

Honda Australia has also funded a 24-person call centre devoted to recall enquiries, and has a public VIN checker that’ll tell you if your vehicle needs new inflators.

Despite the enormity of the task at hand, Honda told us last year that the Takata issue had been less taxing on internal staff than the 2011 Thai floods, which put the factory that made 80 per cent of its vehicles sold here under eight-feet of water.
